Classification & types

U-shape hot-rolled channel (GOST 8240-97)

Classic U-shape section with sloped inner flange faces. Sizes 5—40. Used in frames, ridges, transom beams, equipment mounting.

C-shape hot-rolled channel (GOST 8240-97)

Inner flanges at right angles. Used in welded variable-section beams, trays, cable trays.

Bent channel (GOST 8278-83)

Made by cold-bending strip or sheet. Cheaper than hot-rolled but less rigid. Sizes 50×40×4 — 200×100×8.

FAQ

Q. What does “C” mean in the channel marking?

“C” means the inner flange faces are parallel (no slope). The C-shape channel is more convenient for bolted joints and 5—10% more expensive than U-shape.

Q. Can No. 16 channel be replaced with No. 14 in a project?

Only with calculation and the designer\u2019s approval. Dropping by 1—2 sizes drastically reduces load capacity (the section modulus differs by ~30% between No. 14 and No. 16).
